Lamar Head Coach Jim Gilligan
Opening statement:
“We are happy to be here. Coming from the No. 7 seed in our tournament, I don’t think a lot of people gave us a chance to be here. The kids played great, and we have a good ballclub. We showed that at the beginning of the year. We started 14-4 and beat Rice pretty good, and then we got hurt and became a horrible club for about a month. We’ve started getting healthier, and I think we have been showing that over the last third of the season and into the playoffs. I think we deserve to be here, and I congratulate our players for working hard to get us here.”

On trying to keep momentum up at the end of the season:
“I’ve been very pleased with our players from a competitive standpoint and from a game preparation standpoint. The last week I went out of my way to try and not say anything inspirational. They are self-motivated kids, and I don’t want to interfere with that. It’s sort of fun because at this point in the season, a coach feels like his job is done and you just sit back and watch them play.”

On the field conditions at TCU:
“They have had a lot of rain here, so it’s not fair to compare this field to normal Texas conditions. This time of year in Texas the fields get hard because you don’t want to water them too much in case it rains. You like to have it suitable for play, and it’s a general groundskeeping issue. It was very hard down at Whataburger Field (Corpus Christi), but here we have had some rain and I feel the playing conditions are going to be much better than they were last weekend.”

On TCU’s three top starters:
“I haven’t seen them, though I’ve heard about them. I’m really not focused on TCU. I’m focused on our guys and how we play. I have no control over how they play. All I can do is put my best lineup in there and work my pitching the best way that I can. They have three guys and any one of them could be a No. 1 guy, so there strategy on who to pitch when is up to them. But I read the rule book, and they still have to throw it over the plate. And when they throw it over the plate we’ve been hitting it pretty well over the last few weeks. I’m looking forward to the challenge. This is a great ball club. They had a great ball club, good enough to host the tournament. We are just tickled to be here, and we’re looking forward to competing against some good ball clubs.”

Lamar Senior SP Matison Smith
On TCU’s Lupton Stadium:
“I’m pretty excited about it. The (bullpen mound is) pretty steep, so it gave me a chance to really work down in the zone. I know I’m going to have to make a few adjustments when I go out to the game mound, because it didn’t look as steep. I’ll just try and make adjustments when I can. I’m really excited to be here, and I think we’re all really excited to be here. I think we’re going to play as well as we possibly can. We’re definitely going to compete. I feel we were kind of underestimated in the last tournament (Southland Conference Tournament), and we used that to our advantage. We’ll see if we are underestimated now and see if we can pull it off this time, too.”

Lamar Senior OF Anthony Moore
On his mindset heading into the regional:
“I’m excited to be here. It’s a big park. The gaps are really big, so we’re going to have to be at the top of our game in the outfield defensively. I’m just looking at it as another game in another baseball park. Like coach said, if the ball is over the plate we’re going to swing and hit it. We’re going to make sound defensive plays and just take it like another game.”
