Iowa State 63, TCU 50
Fort Worth, Texas (Daniel-Meyer Coliseum)
Jan. 19, 2013
Attendance: 4,753

TCU HEAD COACH Trent Johnson
On the game:
“Iowa State was talented. They hit us with isolations. There was a lot of pressure on us, and we missed to many free throws. I thought we did a good job. We just have to keep fighting and working through it.

“I thought the freshmen, Clyde Smith and Charles Hill, neither of which have played a lot did a relay good job coming in with the game and balance.

“One of things (that happens) when you are under-manned and play experienced talented teams, it tests your competitiveness, you’re mental toughness, and trying to stay disciplined.”

On the victory:
“Any road win in this conference is a great win. That is a very physical team, and they play hard. They play low-possession games. They will win several games in this league there is no doubt about that. Trent has those guys going out there every single day and every single time they take the floor playing a very physical brand of baskeball. I’m proud of our guys. We were out-sized at pretty much every position. We went out there and battled. Our digs could have been better, especially early in the first half. We got to the point where we could have kicked some of those out and made shots. I thought we defended the perimeter very well today.”

On Iowa State’s best start in 14 years:
“I look at it that we should be 4-0 right now. It still is a tough one to swallow that opening one at Allen Fieldhouse (Kansas). We would be in an awesome position right now. I like where we are. We need to continue to go out and play with the right mindset. Too many offensive rebounds, too many turnovers today, but we found a way to get it done and that is the important thing. Now we can go back and have a couple of good days of practice and get ready for Texas Tech.”

On TCU’s defense:
“They haven’t given up 70 (points) all year, and that’s a heck of a stat to not do that. You think one team would get it going against them. They go in there, they chuck you, they hit you and they are very good on the glass. That is a style that is pretty unique in our league. A lot of teams are trying to get out and play with pace, but with TCU they make you play different. That is why they are in almost every game that they play.”

On turning it on at the end of the first half:
“We were just giving them too many opportunities on a second chance, and weren’t getting the ball out. We weren’t grabbing the rebound like we wanted to and pushing it up and getting that faced-paced basketball that we like to play. Once we started doing that, starting rebounding well and kicking it out, we started playing like we normally do.”

On playing TCU:
“It’s tough for us. We like to play a fast-tempo type game, and they really try to slow it down, grind it and make every possession count. You just have to be able to turn the game over to your favor and play your solid basketball or you get stuck in their game.”

On defending inside:
“I think we did a solid job. They have some really physical guys, and I think the bigs and the guards did a solid job guarding them. It’s hard to win anywhere on the road, especially here, so it’s good to get a road win. We played well.”

On early layups getting him going:
“Yeah. That first half really got me going. Coach (Hoiberg) set up plays for us, which opened up things.”
