Streak Snapped With 75-61 Win Over Southern Miss
Jan 26, 2002
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) _ Junior Blount scored 25 points, including five 3-pointers, as TCU ended a six-game losing streak with a 75-61 victory over Southern Miss on Saturday night.
The Horned Frogs (11-10, 1-6 Conference USA) held Southern Miss (6-11, 1-6 C-USA) to just 24 first-half points on 30 percent shooting from the field. The Frogs hit only 41.2% from the field in the first half, but they connected on seven three-pointers.
"It was not a beautiful game, but it's a win and we'll take it," said head coach Billy Tubbs. "I give our team some credit for hanging in there over the last couple of weeks. I proud of this team for how they've handled the start of conference play, because it has been brutal on the road, but this team has never given up."
"I thought Junior (Blount) played well, and Corey (Santee) gave us a spark off the bench. The group that played at the end of the game did a nice job. They got some big rebounds for us late in the game."
Blount, who has led the Frogs in scoring in five of the seven conference games, scored 16 of his 25 points in the first half.
"We knew we had a good chance to get a victory tonight," said Blount, who hit four three-pointers in the first half. "Everyone came out tonight and played with a lot of intensity. Coach Tubbs kept telling us that good things were going to happen to us. It's nice to play at home and get a win for our fans. If we can go out and play hard every game, then we can win a lot more games."
The Golden Eagles continued to struggle after trailing 36-24 at halftime, hitting just 35 percent of their shots in the second half. For the game, Southern Miss hit only 32.9 percent from the field. The Frogs are now 8-0 this season, when they hold an opponent to less than 80 points.
TCU center Marlon Dumond recorded his fifth double-double this season as he scored 10 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked six shots. Jamal Brown had 11 points and 11 rebounds, posting his eight double-double of the year. Corey Santee came off the bench to score 17 points with six assists for the Horned Frogs.
Elvin Mims paced the Golden Eagles with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Ben Lambert scored nine, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked four shots.
The Frogs return to action on Tuesday, January 29, when they host UAB.
