FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - Jason Smith scored 18 points as Colorado State dealt TCU its 10th consecutive loss with an 82-66 win Tuesday night.
Smith also grabbed 14 rebounds to post his 12th double-double of the season, the 18th of his career. Stephan Gilling added 14 points and Tim Denson had 12 for Colorado State (15-9, 5-7 Mountain West Conference). The Rams out-rebounded the Horned Frogs 40-21 and snapped a five-game losing streak.
The Horned Frogs shot 29 percent from the field in the first half and 37 percent for the game. The losing streak matched its 10-game skid during the 1979-80 season.
Two free throws by Gilling gave CSU's a 20 point 56-36 nearly six minutes into the second half. The Horned Frogs dug in defensively but could only get as close as 60-45 before the Rams regained momentum on successive steals and layups by Tyler Smith and Cory Lewis.
Denson's 3-pointer with 5:50 left made it 73-51.
In the first half, Colorado State appeared to be on the ropes early but used a flurry of 3-pointers to lead 45-32 at the half. Hackett sank three 3-pointers and Ryan Wall sank three free throws off technical fouls on Lewis and CSU coach Dale Layer to lead 28-21 with 8:28 left.
Denson's free throw capped an 11-0 run by the Rams to take a 32-28 edge. Blake Adams sank two free throws to make it 36-32, but Gilling sank two 3-pointers and Denson a third as Colorado State in the last 2:25 of the half.
