TCU Turns Away Stephen F. Austin 84-62
Dec. 8, 2003
FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs (2-4) posted an 84-62 victory over Stephen F. Austin (4-1) on Monday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, snapping a four-game losing streak and sending the Lumberjacks to their first defeat of the season. Stephen F. Austin was rated 17th in the most recent Mid-Major Top 25 poll by CollegeInsider.com.
The Horned Frogs led for all but one minute in the game, but had a battle on their hands after a 47-34 advantage at intermission was cut to four, 58-54, just past the midway point of the second half. However, a 6-0 run by TCU over the next minute propelled the Frogs back into a double-figure lead, and TCU was never seriously threatened again. The Lumberjacks missed their last eight shots from the floor, and scored just one point in the final 6:16.
The Frogs' 47 first-half points, their best offensive output in any half this year, came thanks to 65 percent shooting from the field. TCU was a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the three-point arc. Junior Marcus Shropshire led the way in the opening stanza with 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting. He buried all three of his three-point attempts.
Shropshire ended with a career-high 17 points. He was joined in double figures by Corey Valsin (12), Chudi Chinweze (12) and Corey Santee (10). Freshman Femi Ibikunle recorded a career-high nine points. Valsin led the Frogs with six rebounds.
TCU, which entered the game shooting 59 percent from the free throw line, made 25-of-31 (.806). In addition, TCU outscored SFA 36-14 in the paint and 30-9 in points off turnovers. The Horned Frogs finished the game 7-for-8 (.875) from beyond the arc. TCU is now 9-3 (.750) all-time under Head Coach Neil Dougherty when scoring at least 80 points.
TCU's next game is on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at Texas Tech (6-2). The tip off time for that contest is set for 7:05 p.m. (CT). It can be seen locally on KFWD-52 in Fort Worth/Dallas.
