FORT WORTH, Texas (Dec. 13, 2003) - The TCU Horned Frogs (3-5) completed their grueling stretch of seven games in 15 days by edging the North Texas Mean Green (3-3) by a 62-58 final on Saturday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. It was the lowest point total in a TCU victory since a 57-54 decision at Tulsa on Feb. 26, 1998.

"We needed to prove that we could win a game like this," TCU Head Coach Neil Dougherty said. "Our kids have played so hard all year and this will go a long way for their confidence levels."

The game was sloppy early on, as the two teams totaled 13 turnovers and just 14 points in the first eight minutes. In the first half, TCU and North Texas combined for just 29 percent shooting (17-for-58). TCU led 28-27 at the break despite going 1-for-11 from three-point range. Each team had more turnovers than made field goals in a half that was somewhat reminiscent of last year's meeting, in which the Frogs and Mean Green were tied 29-29 at intermission.

This year, however, the tough defensive struggle continued in the second half. Neither team enjoyed a lead of greater than five points at any time in a game that saw 20 lead changes and 15 ties. The Horned Frogs went on top for good with 4:13 left to play on a Chudi Chinweze free throw that made the score 53-52. Leading by one with less than a minute to play, TCU went 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 44 seconds to seal the victory.

Chinweze, a sophomore forward, led the Frogs with 18 points. He made a living at the charity stripe, sinking 10 of his 16 free throw attempts. Junior guards Corey Santee and Marcus Shropshire added 12 and 11 points respectively. Junior forward Corey Valsin topped the squad with eight rebounds, the highest single-game total by a TCU player this season.

It was the seventh time in eight games this year that TCU has held its opponent under 80 points. In the 2002-03 season, TCU held just 10 of its 28 opponents under 80 points. In addition, it is the first time that a Horned Frog team has held seven teams under the 80-point plateau in any eight-game stretch since Mar. 2 to Dec. 7, 1996 (spanned the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons).

After taking a week off for final exams, TCU will return to action on Monday , Dec. 22 against Arkansas State. The tip off time for that contest is set for 7:05 p.m. (CT).
