FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU Horned Frogs (3-6) dropped a 64-58 final to the 8-1 Arkansas State Indians, who are rated 17th in the most recent CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll, on Monday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.
TCU owned a two-point lead, 33-31, at intermission. The Horned Frogs led by as many as eight in the stanza, but an 8-2 run over the last 2:09 put the Indians back within a bucket in an evenly played first half.
The Horned Frogs allowed just two points in the first five minutes of the second half, building the lead to nine at 42-33. However, Arkansas State went on an 18-7 run to take over the lead for good at the 5:15 mark. TCU trailed by seven with 1:28 remaining, but made it a one-possession game in the final minute. Down three with 28 seconds left, junior Aaron Curtis misfired on a three-pointer from the right wing. ASU made three of four free throws in the final 17 seconds to seal the victory.
Both teams were held under 40 percent shooting from the floor and shot less than 30 percent from three-point range. After making 5-of-11 three-pointers in the first half, the Horned Frogs were 0-for-11 from beyond the arc in the second half. In addition, the Indians owned a 10-rebound advantage after intermission.
Defensively, TCU continued its strong play, forcing 19 turnovers and holding Arkansas State 16 points below the Indians' season average.
