Dec. 12, 2011

Former TCU great Kurt Thomas will continue his long NBA career after signing a free-agent contract with the Portland Trail Blazers over the weekend. The veteran center will enter his 17th season as the NBA's oldest active player at 39 years old, one day older than Phoenix Suns forward Grant Hill.

Portland will mark the ninth different team for which Thomas will have played in his NBA career following previous stops in Miami (1995-97), Dallas (1997-98), New York (1998-2005), Phoenix (2005-07), Seattle (2007-08), San Antonio (2008-09), Milwaukee (2009-10) and Chicago (2010-11). Last season, he started 37 of 52games for a Bulls squad that reached the NBA's Eastern Conference Finals, posting averages of 4.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. Thomas helped the Knicks reach the NBA Finals in 1998-99.

For his career, Thomas ranks among the NBA's top-100 players all-time in games played (97th), total rebounds (100th), offensive rebounds (96th) anddefensive rebounds (55th). He has scored 8,716 points and owns career averages of 8.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 0.8 blocked shots per contest while making 11 NBA playoff appearances.

Thomas, a four-year letterwinner for TCU from 1991 through 1995, earned third-team All-America honors as a senior in 1995. His final season as a Frog saw him become only the third player in NCAA history at the time to lead the nation in both scoring (28.9 ppg) and rebounding (14.6 rpg).

A 6-9 product of Dallas' Hillcrest High School, Thomas still ranks No. 6 at TCU in career scoring, No. 3 in blocked shots and No. 8 in rebounding. He was named the 1995 Southwest Conference Player of the Year prior to being selected with the No. 10 overall pick of the 1995 NBA Draft by the Miami Heat.

Thomas was inducted into the TCU Lettermen's Association Hall of Fame in 2005.
