TCU Beast San Jose State, 65-58
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Greedy Daniels scored 26 points and had seven steals as Texas Christian beat San Jose State 65-58 Saturday night.
Daniels, who entered the game tied for fifth place on the TCU all-time single season steal list, moved up to second place with 70. The total puts Daniels, who hit 9 of 14 shots, 26 steals behind the Horned Frogs' all-time leader, Mike Jones, who had 96 in the 1997-98 season.
The Spartans, averaging 65.6 points a game to TCU's nation-leading 100.6, managed to get the tempo they wanted but were unable to hold the lead down the stretch. They took a 46-41 lead with 11:12 remaining as Billy Landram hit a 3-pointer. But Daniels keyed a late run with a free throw and a steal that he took in for a layup to put TCU up 57-51.
The Horned Frogs (12-3, 2-0 WAC), who ended the game on a 12-7 run over the final four minutes, have now won all 10 of their regular season games in Fort Worth and have won nine of their last 10.
San Jose State (8-5, 0-2) shot well from the field (47.9 percent) but had 20 turnovers to TCU's seven.
Ryan Carroll, the Horned Frogs' leading scorer at a 19.4 clip, struggled. He 5 of 13 shots but only 2 of 9 3-pointers. He had 18 points. Bingo Merriex added 10 points and four rebounds.
The Horned Frogs shots only 36.5 from the field and hit only 6 of 25 3-pointers.
The Spartans had a balanced attack, with Mike Garnett scoring 12, Cory Powell and Darnell Williams with 11 each and Landram and Marion Thurmond with 9 each.
