TCU Falls to UTEP, 92-89

EL PASO, Texas (AP) -- Eugene Costello scored 21 points and handed out eight assists to lead Texas-El Paso to a 92-89 win over TCU Saturday night.

Costello was 4-of-8 from the 3-point line and had four steals for Texas-El Paso (17-4, 6-3 WAC).

TCU (16-7, 5-4) was led by Greedy Daniels, who scored 29 points including hitting 6 of his 7 3-point shots.

Daniels had two chances to win the game for the Horned Frogs in the waning seconds but came up short both times. Down 90-89, his shot in traffic from the lane with 4.8 seconds left missed everything. UTEP's Roy Smallwood got the rebound, was fouled immediately and hit one of two free throws.

Daniels had a second chance with TCU down 91-89, but he lost the ball on the dribble with 1.6 seconds left. UTEP's Chris Neal came up with the ball, was fouled immediately and hit one of two free throws for the game's final points.

Brian Stewart scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Miners. Brandon Wolfram added 19 points, and Smallwood chipped in 12.

Derrick Davenport scored 22 points for TCU. Myron Anthony scored 16 points, while Ryan Carroll and Thomas Mctyler added 10 points apiece. Carroll led the Horned Frogs with seven rebounds.

Both teams shot 55 percent from the field. TCU was 33-60 while UTEP was 30-55. UTEP enjoyed the advantage from the free throw line, hitting 24 of 32 while TCU hit 14 of 16.

The Miners recorded 14 steals on the way to forcing 22 turnovers.

UTEP closed the final two minutes of the first half with an 8-2 run to take a 51-42 halftime lead.
