Frogs Run Past Texas Tech, 92-78
FORT WORTH, TEXAS (December 28, 2000) -- Derrick Davenport narrowly missed a triple-double, collecting a season-high 24 points to go with 15 rebounds and nine blocked shots to lead the TCU Horned Frogs to a 92-78 win over Texas Tech in the Fort Worth Classic, held at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
Davenport, who was held scoreless last Saturday at Butler and did not start tonight's game after missing a practice due to a sore knee, hit 8-of-19 shots from the field and 8-of-11 from the free throw line en route to his top scoring night of the season.
Greedy Daniels also came off the bench to add 20 points, including eight points in less than a minute during a key stretch in the second half. The Red Raiders had cut TCU's lead, which was as high as 12, down to five at 75-70 with just under six minutes remaining in the contest. Daniels scored on a layup to put TCU up by seven, but the lead was quickly cut to four on a three-pointer by Texas Tech's Marcus Shropshire. Daniels then hit a conventional three-pointer, made a steal and drilled a three-pointer from beyond the arc, to put the Frogs up by 10, a lead they would not relinquish.
TCU (9-3) outshot Texas Tech (5-5) from the field, 44.8 percent to 39.8 percent. The Frogs dominated from the free throw line, connecting on 24-of-31 attempts, while the Red Raiders were limited to just 8-of-19 from the charity stripe.
Andy Ellis led Texas Tech with 23 points. The 6-11 junior center hit 11-of-21 shots from the field before fouling out. Senior forward Cliff Owens added a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
TCU will be in action again on Saturday when they host Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a 7:05 p.m. contest at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum on the TCU campus.
