TCU Postgame Quotes
TCU 42, Southern Miss 17
November 20, 2004
Amon G. Carter Stadium

TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
On the game
"Every game with Southern Miss has been a great game playing at either place. This was probably the most complete game we've played all year minus the penalties. When it comes down to it tonight, TCU made the plays."

On the defense
"We came and played. We made the same calls and people made plays."

On the offense
"Obviously I'm not happy about the penalties, but I was impressed with the way we held onto the ball."

On the all-black uniforms
"I told the guys when I thought there was a game when we had our backs to the wall and needed a win, we'd pull them out."

On Cory Rodgers
"Cory Rodgers is a sophomore and he is starting to grow up. There are those who can play in a game and there are those who can take over a game."

On next week's game vs. Tulane
"This next game is not going to be any easier. We're going to have a tough game next week. We're going to stay steady and patient. We're going to get up tomorrow and do what we always do to win the game."

TCU Safety Marvin Godbolt
On the difference in the defense
"The difference was we made plays today. We took shots and made them count. We needed to regroup and put the pieces together. We played a great game."

On his play
"Coach P put me in the right position and I made the plays. I went 100 percent tonight."

On the black uniforms
"Before we left for the hotel, (Anthony) Alabi and I talked to Coach P. It gave us an emotional boost. He said that if we wear them, we have to win."

On Quincy Butler's interception return
"We knew he was a track star and he has good speed. It's good for him. The great plays always give you confidence."

TCU Quarterback Brandon Hassell
On his preparation for starting the game
"We talked earlier this week that it would probably be me starting. I prepared the way I do for any game."

On the consistency of TCU this game
"I'm not sure what was different tonight. Maybe we had our backs against the wall and knew we needed to play. We had to put points on the board and execute."

On the opening drive
"A lot of times we defer to the second half, but this time we got out and got going. We didn't have to think about the defense, we just got the ball and went down and scored. It was a confidence boost."

On the long drive
"Every time we needed to get a first down, we got it. We never quit. Coach made the right calls. He always says there's no good call for a 1st-and-25, but he found one tonight."

On the pressure of reaching a bowl game
"Nobody wants to be the group to not go to a bowl game. We don't want to be sitting there in December and January watching other teams. We want to be in the mix. It's something we've never experienced, and we don't want to experience it now."

TCU Linebacker Martin Patterson
On the defense
"I think coach has been scared a little bit with the defense with our defensive line being young and new. He told us to go back to the basics and go out and play football and we came out with a victory."

TCU Wide Receiver Cory Rodgers
On his touchdown reception
"I didn't know it was coming to me, but I read the safeties and broke off the post. Brandon made a good throw and I got it before it hit the ground. It's something we practice all the time. Keep your eyes on the ball."

Southern Miss Head Coach Jeff Bower
On the team's performance
"We came out very flat and lethargic. This was truly embarrassing. I put the blame entirely on myself. I am disappointed and surprised in the way that we played. We came out with a lack of focus and I don't really know why it happened. We had a number of injuries in this game and came away really beat up. That's what happens when you don't come ready to play."

On the blocked punt
"I thought we could have taken control of the momentum after the blocked punt. I thought that we scored a touchdown on that possession. It could have changed the game if we could have punched it in."

On the defense
"We got no pressure on the quarterback all game long. We gave up a lot of the third downs. The moved the ball all game long."

Defensive Back John Eubanks
On the TCU offense
"They came out fast today and drove the ball downfield on us to take the early lead. They did to us what we were trying to do to them."

Linebacker Michael Boley
On the game
"TCU wanted this game more than we did. I thought we came out ready to play, but we just didn't get the job done."

On the TCU offense
"They were doing everything they've done to us in the past. We just couldn't make the plays and get the job done."

Defensive Lineman Eric Scott
On the game
"They made the plays and they played with the tempo that they wanted to."

On the lack of pressure by Southern Miss front four
"They did a lot of slot protection on us tonight and they made it hard for us to do anything tonight."

Flanker Antwon Courington
On the punt block
"We almost got some momentum on the punt block, but we could only come away with the three points. By not getting into the end zone, we kind of gave the momentum back to them."

On the TCU defense
"They played a lot more cover two in the secondary and that kind of caught us off guard. They got the momentum early and we were never able to get it back."
