TCU vs. Houston
Post-Game Texas Bowl Notes
Dec. 28, 2007
Final: TCU 20, Houston 13
*TCU has won three straight bowl games for the first time since the opening three bowl games (1936-39) in its history.
*TCU improved to 6-3 in bowls with Gary Patterson on its coaching staff and 4-3 with him as head coach. Prior to Patterson's arrival on campus in 1998, the Frogs had just four bowl wins in their history.
*The Horned Frogs improved to 10-12-1 all-time in bowl games.
*TCU limited Houston to 32 yards rushing on 30 carries. In their last three bowl games, the Frogs have held their opponent to 46 yards rushing (15.3 per game) on 84 attempts for an average of 0.5 yards per carry.
*TCU is now 41-0 when allowing 17 or fewer points under Patterson. Overall, the Frogs have won 56 consecutive games when holding their opponent to 17 points or less. The steak dates back to 1999.
*TCU improved to 29-3, since 2005, when playing on a day of the week other than Thursday. The Frogs are 1-5 on Thursdays the last three seasons.
*The Frogs won their 20th consecutive game when holding the edge in time of possession. The Frogs had the ball for 31:32.
*TCU earned an eighth-straight win over Houston. The streak began in 1993 when both teams were in the Southwest Conference.
*TCU totaled five sacks to finish with 41 on the season. The Frogs recorded 40 sacks over the last 11 games.
*TCU's victory enabled the Mountain West Conference to improve to 4-0 in bowl games this season. MWC-member Air Force faces Cal on Monday in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl at TCU's Amon G. Carter Stadium.
*Redshirt freshman quarterback Andy Dalton was named the Texas Bowl Most Valuable Player after completing 21-of-30 pass attempts for 249 yards. He added 17 yards rushing and a 3-yard scoring run.
*Dalton set TCU single-season records for completions (222) and attempts (371) while finishing second in passing yards (2,459). The 222 completions surpass the previous TCU mark of 207 by Max Knake in 1993. Dalton broke the record with a 9-yard pass to Shae Reagan in the second quarter. Dalton's 371 attempts better Knake's 369 in 1995. Dalton set the record on a 9-yard fourth-quarter completion to Bart Johnson. Dalton's 2,459 passing yards rank second on TCU's single-season list behind Knake's 1994 total of 2,624.
*Dalton's 59.8 completion percentage on the year places fourth for a single season at TCU.
*Dalton's 3-yard second-quarter touchdown run was his fifth rushing touchdown of the season. Four of those scores came in the last four games.
*Brian Bonner's 65 punt return yards on three attempts gave him 535 in 2007 to finish second on TCU's single-season chart, trailing only Heisman Trophy winner Davey O'Brien (549 yards, 1937).
*Bonner, who tied Jason Phillips for the TCU lead with 10 tackles, also recovered an on-side kick in the fourth quarter.
*Chase Ortiz recorded a fourth-quarter sack, giving him 20.5 for his career. He ranks fifth on TCU's all-time sacks chart. Fellow senior defensive end Tommy Blake concluded his career with 23.0 sacks to place third.
*Stephen Hodge's second-quarter sack was his eighth of the season. He leads the nation in sacks by a defensive back. He had seven sacks in the final seven games.
*Hodge totaled a team-best three tackles for a loss against Houston.
*Chris Manfredini had field goals of 29 and 36 yards to finish 22-of-27 on the campaign and 47-of-54 in his TCU career. In just three seasons, Manfredini ranks third on the Frogs' career list for made field goals. The 22 field goals in 2007 place fourth on the Frogs' single-season chart.
*Justin Watts' 9-yard scoring run on the second play of the fourth quarter, for TCU's go-ahead points in the game, was his second rushing touchdown of the season and his career.
*Linebacker Robert Henson had four tackles. He will enter his senior season next fall with 199 career stops.
