Verrett Headed to Pro Bowl

Jan. 15, 2016

FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU football great and San Diego Chargers cornerback Jason Verrett will play in the Jan. 31 Pro Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Verrett gives TCU at least one Pro Bowler in four of the last five seasons (Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals, 2011, 2014; Daryl Washington, Arizona Cardinals, 2012). Verrett is the first Chargers cornerback to play in the Pro Bowl since Antonio Cromartie in 2008.

In just his second season, Verrett emerged as one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL. He led the Chargers with three interceptions and 11 passes defensed while adding 47 tackles with two for loss.

Verrett notched his first career pick-six on Monday Night Football against the Chicago Bears when he intercepted Jay Cutler and ran it back 68 yards. His diving pick off Alex Smith ended the quarterback’s streak of 312 passes without an interception, second longest in NFL history. Verrett regularly drew the assignment of defending the opponent's top receiver.

A two-time first-team All-American at TCU, Verrett was tabbed the 2013 Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Year by the conference's head coaches. He was a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist and Lott IMPACT Trophy quarterfinalist. Verrett was also the State's Defensive Player of the Year by Dave Campbell's Texas Football.

Over his last two seasons as a Horned Frog, Verrett topped the nation with 38 passes defended (eight interceptions, 30 pass breakups).

In his final game as a Horned Frog, Verrett limited Antwan Goodley, Baylor's leading receiver, to just one catch for 12 yards. Verrett also broke up two passes in the process. Earlier in the year, Verrett held Texas Tech's Eric Ward, who had 83 receptions on the season, without a catch for the entire game. Goodley and Ward were two of the Big 12's top-four receivers. When lined up against LSU's Odell Beckham Jr., Verrett allowed just one reception. He totaled seven stops, including a sack, while adding three pass breakups versus LSU.

Verrett received his TCU degree in December 2013.
