2013 Signing Day News Conference Quotes
TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson
Opening Statement …
“I’m going into my 16th year now. As always, we have some new names, new faces and our latest paper tigers. We will see how it works. This signing class was interesting. Like usual, we gained a few at the end and we lost some at the end. Overall, it's a pretty good class. We had a small senior class last season, so we have the majority of the group coming back. We do not have many seniors in our upcoming class. We still have a very young football team.”

On the recruiting impact of being in the Big 12 …
“I think you will see it in the upcoming recruiting cycle. It made a difference this season, but I think you will see it even more now that all of the facilities are completed. Most of the facilities were not completed when we had Junior Days last year. The kids see the progress, but they do not get to see the end result. We are already seeing the amount of interest is up. You have to play the ebbs and flows. If you watch the highlight tapes of the two guys we added to the class late, you will see they are as good as our early commits. We made a living off two-star and three-star guys to get here.”

On the quarterback position …
“Zach Allen is a quarterback out of Temple. He has been in our off-season program and has done a great job. He is a big-time competitor. We really needed to add another quarterback to the roster, and he is a good fit for us. Matt Brown will be moving back to receiver. Zach will be part of the QB group along with Tyler Matthews, Casey (Pachall) and Trevone (Boykin). That gives us four quarterbacks in the spring and the ability to move some people around.”

On the offensive line …
“You have to build an offense from the front on back. We went out to the junior colleges to get Lloyd Tunstill. We were able to bring in Patrick Morris from (Denton) Guyer. They made it all the way to the state championship game. Both those guys are very physical. We are also adding Joseph Noteboom and Eason Fromayan, two young tackles who we are looking to redshirt."

On the running backs …
“I call them Thunder and Lightning. We have a smaller and faster one in Kyle Hicks, a recruit who garnered national interest. Trevorris Johnson from the Houston area is a bigger back at 5-foot-11, 205 who will end up around a 220-pound back. They took visits to a lot of big-time places. We have just three tailbacks who are going to be ready for spring practice, so we are a little thin there, but it will be up to six in the fall.”

On the wide receiver position …
“We needed to help ourselves at the receiver position. Cam Echols-Luper is the son of Coach (Curtis) Luper. He is a really good kick returner. We also added Jermaine Antoine from Loreauville, La., and Ty Slanina from East Bernard. All three have the ability to play and are versatile in the things they can do.”

On tight ends …
“We add Charlie Reid, a local kid from All Saints. We also add Bryson Burtnett, who can also play at snapper. Bryson is already in our program and has done a fantastic job. Charlie is a pass catcher with really good hands and good speed. We also did not have Stephen Bryant all of last season. He's someone who could have started for us."

On linebackers …
“One of the primary positions we felt we had to address and get better at was linebacker. Sammy Douglas is from Arlington. Like many of our linebackers who have gone on to the professional ranks, he comes in a little undersized. Daryl Washington and David Hawthorne are both examples of that. We look for guys who can make plays and be aggressive.  Sammy falls into that category. Along with Sammy, we add Paul Whitmill from Bastrop and Dac Shaw out of East Texas.”

On the defensive backs …
“When you play a five defensive back system, you have to group them accordingly. Corner wise we come out of it with Ranthony Texada and Cydney Calvin. We also bring in Steve Welsey, who is a bigger corner and can help us in our nickel package. On the inside, Denzel Johnson was a late take for us but a good take. He is a guy we are going to try at safety with George Baltimore.”

On the defensive line …
“We added a junior college guy in Mike Tuaua and also Bryson Henderson from Mansfield. Both give us needed depth at those positions.”
