Three days before TCU linebacker Paul Dawson reported to camp with the Cincinnati Bengals, TCU head coach Gary Patterson gave him some sound advice: Don't boast or brag too much; it's better to understate and then overplay.

That will be Dawson's mindset as he embarks on the next stage in his football career.

"I'm glad I am in the position I am in. It's a blessing," said Dawson, who was a third-round pick of the Bengals. "I'm going to go there and put my head down and work. I'm going to do whatever they ask me to do."

He's used to hard work, though.

Dawson, a Dallas native who prepped at Skyline High School, played receiver in HS and linebacker in his only year of junior college, and when he came to TCU he had to earn his stripes at linebacker, and he's planning on doing the same thing with the Bengals.

"I am going in with the same mindset I would have if I were a first-round pick," he said. "I am ready to go in and work and be the best player Paul Dawson can possibly be."

In Cincinnati, Andy Dalton will be one face he'll recognize, and Dawson will call on the former Frog QB to help him through his transition.

"Andy Dalton is a great guy, and he has a lot of experience," Dawson said. "He'll be able to help me and guide me and show me how everything works, and give me some tips on how to be a pro and help me with all the little things."

In his senior season with the Frogs, Dawson was named consensus first-team All-American and was the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the year. He finished the seasons with 136 stops and was the only player in the country with at least 100 tackles, six sacks and four interceptions.

Now he's ready to take his game to the next level.

"I am really happy. I'm going to a great team with a great scheme and a great coach," he said. "It's a great defense, and I can't wait to be a part of it."
