TCU Duo on Nagurski Trophy Watch List

July 8, 2016

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- TCU defensive end Josh Carraway and linebacker Travin Howard have been named to the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, recognizing the nation's top defensive player.

Carraway and Howard are also on the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List.

Carraway is the Big 12’s only returning first-team all-conference defensive selection from last season. The Flower Mound, Texas, native led TCU last season with nine sacks and three fumble recoveries, including one returned for a touchdown in the win over Baylor. He placed second on the Horned Frogs with 11 1/2 tackles for loss among 47 stops.

Carraway received his TCU degree in May 2016 and will play this season as a graduate student.

Howard, who began last season as a back-up safety before being moved to linebacker, was honorable-mention All-Big 12 and the 2016 Valero Alamo Bowl Defensive Most Valuable Player. He led the Horned Frogs with 105 tackles, including eight for loss, with three forced fumbles, a sack and interception.

Carraway and Howard will represent TCU’s defense at the July 18 Big 12 Media Day in Dallas.

TCU two-time first-team All-American Jerry Hughes was a Nagurski Trophy finalist in 2008 and 2009.

TCU returns seven defensive starters from the close of last season as well as four additional starters who suffered season-ending injuries a year ago.

The Horned Frogs begin camp Aug. 3. The season opener is Sept. 3 versus South Dakota State at Amon G. Carter Stadium.
