FORT WORTH, Texas -- TCU football coach Gary Patterson opened the Horned Frogs' preseason camp with a news conference Wednesday in the Four Sevens Team Room.

The Horned Frogs will hold their first practice Thursday at 4 p.m.

Included below are excerpts from Patterson's meeting with the media.

Opening Statement ...
"Well, it looks like we are going to start another new chapter. We made it to another year. We're excited to have everyone back. All of the new faces are here, so we are ready to go."

On having a plan for the two quarterbacks ...
"Like I have been saying from the beginning, it's a pretty close race. We are going to judge it by scrimmages and see how it all works. If it's a tie, the older guy is going to win it. He has been around awhile. You don't lose your position because of injury, but also I think it has changed Trevone (Boykin). I think Trevone has really matured on and off the field from where he was when we ended the season with the bowl game."

On his biggest concern this season ...
"Offensively, it's the depth. We lost some starters on the offensive line and a go-to wide receiver. You guys have been reading about Josh Boyce and Marcus Cannon with the Patriots, and they are doing an awesome job. Josh Boyce always played big in big games. Who is going to play big in big games and who is going to block? A lot of those guys had to play as true freshmen, and now they are going to be juniors. Whether it is Brandon Carter or David Porter or Cam White or LaDarius Brown. Just go down the list of guys that are all going to be sophomores and juniors. We need a guy to be able to step up.

"At linebacker, and I said this a year ago, it is going to take us a couple of years to recruit ourselves into the depth and kind of players that we are used to here. The defensive line is as deep as we have been."

On playing great competition in LSU the first game of the season ...
"I don't think there is any question that competition makes everyone better. I read something that the Katy High School coach said about playing in the state championship game a year ago. He said they are not going up there to play in Cowboys Stadium. We are going up there to win a state championship. We have to understand the same thing. We are not going over there to play in Cowboys Stadium. We are going over there to try and find a way to beat LSU by one point. That is what our goal is."

On how to prepare the team for the games after LSU ...
"I am one of those guys who remembers the Northwestern State game in 2001. I almost got fired after two ballgames.  We're in a good situation that you have to come back and play at Texas Tech. I think we are in a lot different situation as a program now. We have to learn that the big games take care of themselves."
