Fields on Hendricks Award Watch List
Aug. 6, 2013
CHICAGO -- TCU's Devonte Fields is on the watch list for the Ted Hendricks Award, presented to the nation's top defensive end.
TCU two-time consensus first-team All-American Jerry Hughes was the 2009 recipient of the Ted Hendricks Award.
Fields, the 2012 Associated Press Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year as a true freshman, was a unanimous selection by the conference coaches as the Defensive Freshman of the Year.
This year's Preseason Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, Fields now appears on watch lists for four national awards. He's also a candidate for the Chuck Bednarik Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Rotary Lombardi Award.
A Fort Worth native, Fields led the Big 12 last season with 18 1/2 tackles for loss while placing third with 10 sacks. Fields' sack total tied for fourth in a season by a Horned Frog, breaking the TCU freshman record of seven set by eventual NFL All-Pro Aaron Schobel in 1997. Fields took part in a sack in nine of 13 games.
Fields' 53 tackles topped the defensive front. He added two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, interception and four pass breakups.
