2015 Preview: Linebackers Defined by Competition

Aug. 17, 2015

FORT WORTH, Texas-- GoFrogs.com continues its preview of the 2015 TCU football team with a look at the linebacker position.

A group of young players, including seven freshmen, are competing to replace consensus first-team All-American Paul Dawson and graduated standout Marcus Mallet.

Sammy Douglas (6-3, 215, Jr.) and Mike Freeze (6-3, 220, Fr.) entered fall camp in first-team positions.

Douglas saw most of his action on special teams last year. His eight special teams tackles tied for the team lead. The Arlington, Texas, native posted a career-high seven stops, including a sack, at SMU. He totaled 17 tackles on the season.

Freeze was an early enrollee who took part in spring drills. The Graham High School graduate was sidelined his senior season due to injury. He made 92 tackles as a junior with five interceptions, five pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Alec Dunham (6-1, 213, Fr.), like Freeze, was an early enrollee who went through spring practice. Dunham was the District 8-4A Most Valuable Player as well as a first-team academic all-state selection as a senior at Coldspring-Oakhurst High School.

Ty Summers (6-2, 230, RFr.) is pushing hard for a starting job. Summers suffered a season-ending injury in the 2014 opener and received a medical redshirt. The San Antonio native was a unanimous All-District 26-5A selection as a senior, excelling as a dual-threat quarterback for Reagan High School. He passed for 2,001 yards and 16 touchdowns while rushing for 1,773 yards and 31 scores.

Montrel Wilson (6-3, 208, Fr.) and Semaj Thomas (6-2, 230, Fr.) are true freshmen looking to impress in fall camp.

Wilson, who arrived at TCU as a safety, was rated the No. 17 safety in the state and No. 18 in the Midlands region by Scout.com. He was a first-team All-District 5-6A selection his senior year, when he recorded 115 tackles and three interceptions for Fossil Ridge High School in Keller.

Thomas, from Fort Worth Southwest High School, was ranked second among middle linebackers in the state and Midlands region as well as No. 12 nationally. He was the No. 48 overall prospect in Texas and the co-Defensive Most Valuable Player for District 7-5A.
