Clay Named Semifinalist For Campbell Trophy
Sept. 30, 2010
DALLAS -- TCU wide receiver Curtis Clay has been named a semifinalist for the 2010 William V. Campbell Trophy, presented by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
Clay is playing this season as a graduate student. In May, he received his TCU degree in broadcast journalism.
A native of Lockhart, Texas, Clay totaled a career-high 18 receptions with three touchdowns last season. He had a 6-yard scoring grab in the 14-10 win at Clemson in addition to a 30-yard touchdown reception in the Fiesta Bowl.
Clay, who came to TCU as a walk-on before earning a scholarship, is tied for fifth on this year's team with five receptions in the opening four games.
Clay has volunteered at numerous youth camps and regularly speaks to elementary school kids about the value of education and how academics and athletics can go together. He is a member of the leadership team for TCU Ignite, a student organized on-campus ministry, while also serving on the Leadership Council for the TCU football team. Over the summer, he worked with local kids from a homeless shelter in helping restore a dog park.
Each candidate for the Campbell Trophy must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
Finalists selected by the NFF Awards Committee will be recognized as part of the 2010 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, receiving an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship. The Campbell Trophy winner, who will have his scholarship increased to $25,000 and receive a 25-pound bronze trophy, will be announced at the NFF's Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 7 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.
