Oct. 29, 2013
OKLAHOMA CITY -- TCU All-America cornerback Jason Verrett has been named a semifinalist for the 2013 Jim Thorpe Award, presented to the nation's top defensive back.
Since the start of the 2012 season, Verrett tops the nation with 36 passes defended (eight interceptions, 28 pass breakups). No other player has more than 29.
Despite not seeing many balls thrown his way this season, Verrett leads the Big 12 and is third nationally with 1.8 passes defended per game. He has two picks and 12 pass breakups.
The senior from Fairfield, Calif., is sixth on TCU with 33 tackles, including 3 1/2 for loss with a sack.
Verrett is also a quarterfinalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy. He was a first-team choice on all five Midseason All-America teams released (CBSSports.com, ESPN.com, SI.com, USA Today and Phil Steele). He was ranked by ESPN.com as the No. 1 player in the Big 12.
Former TCU safety Tejay Johnson was a 2010 Jim Thorpe Award finalist.
