TUCSON, Ariz.--TCU concluded a successful opening to its spring season Tuesday by finishing runner-up at the Arizona Intercollegiate held at Vistoso Golf Club. Sophomore Julien Brun earned a share of third place in the individual standings to lead the Horned Frogs.
The Frogs finished the two-day, three-round event at -6 overall (846), two strokes behind the team champion, No. 5 New Mexico. TCU, which entered the final round tied atop the leaderboard with Arizona State, would have claimed the team title had it been allowed to count the final-round score of freshman Paul Barjon, who shot 70 but was disqualified following the conclusion of his round due to a discrepancy with his scorecard.
Barjon noticed the error when scores were posted and correctly reported to scoring officials, leading to the disqualification. The result dropped TCU from a one-stroke lead to a two-shot deficit.
Despite the miscue, it was still a very successful spring opening for the Frogs, who finished one stroke ahead of a group of talented top-5 finishers that included top-ranked Cal (-5), Arizona State (-1) and Arizona (+10).
Brun continued his typical consistent play in the final round, posting his third consecutive 2-under-par score of 69 to finish at -6 overall, three shots behind Cal's Michael Kim and Joel Stalter, who shared the individual title at -9. Brun, the runner-up finisher at the 2012 NCAA Championship, birdied two of his last four holes to post his 21st sub-70 score in 48 career rounds as a Frog.
Joining Brun in the top 10 for the second time in three tournaments this season was senior Eli Cole, who tied for eighth place at -2 overall. Cole fired a 2-over 73 in the final round after earlier totals of 67 and 71. The performance continued a strong comeback run from a broken leg that cost Cole the entire 2011-12 season. Both of his career top-10 finishes have now come this season.
Fellow senior Pontus Gad also fared well for the Frogs in his first tournament of the year after sitting out the fall semester to work on his game. Gad grabbed a share of 11th place at even par, firing identical scores of 71 all three rounds. Senior Daniel Jennevret regrouped from two straight 2-over rounds of 73 with a 71 in the final round to climb into a tie for 21st on the final leaderboard at +4 overall.
Sophomore Sarosh Adi also competed for TCU as an individual entry. He tied for 45th place (+10).
TCU continues its spring campaign next week when it travels to Hilo, Hawaii, for the Amer Ari Invitational at Waikoloa Beach Resort. Three rounds of competition will be held over three days Wednesday through Friday on the Waikoloa Kings' Course.
