PALM DESERT, Calif.—TCU dominated action during the opening round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at The Classic Club on Friday, placing all five of its golfers among the top 5 of the individual standings in addition to racing out to a big lead in the team competition.

The Horned Frogs, currently ranked No. 13 in the Golfweek/Sagarin national team rankings, posted an 11-under-par round of 277 to grab a seven-shot advantage on a field that includes three other top-50 squads. TCU has now held at least a share of the first-round lead in each of its four spring tournaments to date.

No. 23 St. Mary’s, No. 39 Texas Tech and San Francisco currently lead the chase pack in a three-way tie for second place at -4. TCU is aiming for its first tournament victory of the season after claiming a pair of top-3 results in its three previous spring events.

Sophomore All-American Julien Brun, who led TCU on the leaderboard earlier this week at The Prestige at PGA WEST with a tie for seventh place, owns a share of top individual honors following Round 1. Brun, who collected four birdies and an eagle Friday, fired a 4-under 68 to match Texas Tech’s Clement Sordet for the low round of the day.

Senior Eli Cole trails Brun and Clement by just one shot at -3 (69), good for a share of third place alongside Jonathan De Los Reyes of St. Mary’s. TCU’s three other individuals, seniors Pontus Gad and Daniel Jennevret and freshman Paul Barjon, are among an 11-player logjam tied for fifth after each shot a 2-under 70 in Round 2.

Also competing this week for the Frogs as an individual is freshman Michael Culin, who sits in a tie for 48th place after carding a 3-over 75.

TCU continues competition at Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Saturday with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. PST.
