LOS ANGELES—TCU opened its road trip to the West Coast strong Saturday, posting a 4-1 dual-match victory over Pepperdine at Rancho Park Golf Club. The event marked the ninth-ranked Horned Frogs’ first stand-alone dual-match event in more than 10 years.
The Frogs dominated Saturday’s competition, as sophomore Julien Brun (2&1 over Jeremy Sanders), senior Pontus Gad (2&1 over Frederick Wedel), freshman Paul Barjon (5&4 over Cody McManus) and senior Eli Cole (4&2 over Nick Thomas) each won individual matches to propel the team to victory. Kevin DeHuff gave the Waves their lone point, winning on the 19th hole over Frogs senior Daniel Jennevret.
TCU head coach Bill Montigel added the match against Pepperdine, as well as one on April 19 vs. Georgia Tech, to his team’s schedule this year as preparation for a possible trip to the NCAA Championship. The eight-team finals portion of the national championship has been contested with a match-play format dating back to the 2009-10 season. TCU opened the fall campaign with a medal-match-play competition, the four-team Carmel Cup in Monterey, Calif., which the squad also won.
Saturday’s event proved to be just a warm-up for the Frogs, who also will compete in the San Diego Classic early this week at San Diego Country Club. The Frogs will play a practice round Sunday, followed by 36 holes Monday and the final 18 Tuesday.
