March 17, 2013

TUCSON, Ariz.—Sophomore All-American Julien Brun matched his own TCU single-season record with his third individual victory of the year while leading the Horned Frogs to a runner-up team finish Sunday at the Don Puckette National Invitational Tournament at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club.

The Frogs concluded the two-day tournament with a 19-under-par total of 845 following a 3-under 285 in the final round to fall just one stroke shy of team champion New Mexico (-20). The Lobos, ranked third in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarain national rankings, rallied from a six-stroke deficit to overtake both TCU and Round 2 leader Oklahoma State, which entered Sunday with a one-stroke edge on the Frogs. The Cowboys finished in third place at -12, seven strokes behind TCU.

The Frogs recorded their fifth top-3 finish in six spring tournaments this season. The squad, which entered the weekend as the nation’s No. 8-ranked team, defeated five top-40 teams during the event: No. 13 Oklahoma State, No. 18 SMU, No. 19 Arkansas, No. 27 Texas A&M and No. 37 UNLV.

Brun finished the weekend with an 8-under-par total of 208 to top the individual leaderboard by one shot over Texas A&M’s Ben Crancer for his sixth career victory. He entered the day with a four-shot advantage before carding a 3-over 75 in the final round. Brun added to his list of previous victories this season at The Carmel Cup in September and last month at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. His six career wins are three more than any other golfer has recorded while playing for TCU.

Joining Brun among the top-3 in the final individual standings was senior Daniel Jennevret, who earned a four-way share of third place at -6 overall. Jennevret helped the Frogs keep pace with New Mexico in the final round with a 2-under 70. The final placing marked his best this season and the eighth top-5 result of his career.

Also aiding TCU’s final-day charge was freshman Paul Barjon, who recoded the top round of the day by a Frog with a 3-under 69 to climb into a tie for 19th place at -1. Barjon entered Sunday tied for 38th place at +2 overall.

TCU placed all five of its individuals on the top half of the leaderboard, as seniors Pontus Gad (+1) and Eli Cole (+3) finished tied for 21st and 35th, respectively. Both Frogs fired 1-over totals of 73 in the final round.

TCU continues its spring campaign March 28 through 30 at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif.
