De Beer Finishes Runner Up at Barona Creek

LAKESIDE, Calif.—Senior Johan de Beer finished in a four-way tie for second place on the individual leaderboard Friday while leading the TCU men’s golf team to sixth place at the Barona Collegiate Cup at Barona Creek Golf Club.

TCU finished with a three-round, 2-under par total of 1,078, one stroke in front of seventh-place Northwestern. San Diego State, the tournament host, took top team honors at -29 for the week.

De Beer continued his strong recent play, earning his second top-five finish of the season with an 11-under total of 205, three strokes behind top medalist J.J. Spaun of San Diego State (-14). The Horned Frog senior shot in red figures in each of his three rounds, finishing second-round play Friday morning with a 2-under 70 before carding another 70 in his final round. He shot 68 Thursday in Round 1 and now has 11 top-5 finishes in his Frog career.

Freshman Julien Brun moved up the leaderboard Friday to finish 19th place at -4. After entering the final round at even par, Brun fired a 68 Friday afternoon. Junior Daniel Jennevret tied for 38th place at +2 for the tournament after finishing Round 2 with a 75 and shooting 74 in the final 18. Sophomore Ian Phillips (+5) and freshman Thomas Mantovanini (+13) both shot 77 in Round 3 to tie for 56th and 79th, respectively. Sophomore Johnny Antle posted the fourth-best score among TCU’s contingent in the final round with a 74 to earn a share of 85th (+15).

Two additional Frogs made the trip to Southern California to play as individuals in freshmen Jacob Gould and Greg Holmes. Gould, who recorded a hole-in-one Thursday during the opening round, tied for 83rd place (+14), while Holmes earned a share of 89th (+17).

TCU continues its spring season next weekend, when it travels to Augusta, Ga., for the Insperity ASU Invitational hosted by Augusta State Saturday and Sunday at Forest Hills Golf Club.
