STANFORD, Calif.—Senior Pontus Gad and freshman Paul Barjon earned a share of the individual lead to help TCU finish Round 1 of the U.S. Intercollegiate in third place, two shots back of the team leader, Thursday at Stanford Golf Course.

Gad and Barjon were among a group of nine golfers who fired 4-under-par rounds of 70 to grab a piece of the individual lead heading into Friday’s second round. Both Horned Frogs recorded the low rounds of their TCU careers. Gad bested the 68 he carded as a sophomore in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Colorado Regional, while Barjon topped the 69 he shot in his last round two weeks ago at the National Invitational Tournament. Gad recorded five birdies on the day, as well as an eagle 3 on the par-5 hole No. 7. Barjon also eagled No. 7 in addition to notching birdies on three of his final five holes.

The individual efforts of TCU’s co-leaders helped the squad finish the day with a 6-under-par round of 274. Tournament host Stanford totaled an 8-under 272 on its home course to set the opening-day pace, while St. Mary’s (Calif.) sits one shot back of the Cardinal, and one ahead of the Frogs, at -7.

Senior Daniel Jennevret joined Gad and Barjon among the top-25 golfers on the individual leaderboard in a tie for 25th place with an even-par 70. Fellow senior Eli Cole finished off TCU’s scoring efforts with a 2-over 72. Sophomore All-American Julien Brun carded a 3-over 73.

TCU continues competition at the U.S. Intercollegiate with Round 2 Friday. Groups will begin teeing off from holes 1 and 10 at 8 a.m. PDT.
