MONTEREY, Calif.--The TCU men's golf team opened its 2012 fall season in strong fashion this weekend, fighting off a strong field to win the Carmel Cup, a medal match play tournament pitting the Horned Frogs against Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt.
TCU posted a one-point victory over national preseason top-10 opponent Texas A&M, 12.5-11.5, after halving six matches against Texas Tech, 3-3, in Sunday's third and final round at Pebble Beach Golf Club. The Frogs opened the weekend with a 4-2 win over the Aggies on Saturday morning at Bayonet Golf Club before winning 5 ½ out of a possible six points against Vanderbilt in the afternoon at Pebble Beach.
The strong showing validated TCU's high expectations for the 2012-13 campaign, as four golfers who have made at least one appearance at the NCAA Championship return to this season's lineup, including a first-team All-American in sophomore Julien Brun. The squad also added a freshman listed among the top 100 in the world amateur rankings this past offseason in French national Paul Barjon.
The Frogs were listed at No. 20 in Golfweek's preseason national rankings released last week.
Brun opened his second collegiate season just like his first, winning the overall individual title by three strokes over Texas Tech's Finley Ewing IV with a 10-under par score of 206 (70-68-68). Brun won both of his matches on Saturday before dropping the Sunday round to Ewing, who shot a 67, but the performance was more than enough to give the Frog a comfortable overall win.
The individual title marked the fourth for Brun in only 14 career events as a Frog. He opened his freshman season with a victory at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate before adding titles last spring at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational and Insperity Augusta State Invitational. Brun capped the year by tying for runner-up honors at the NCAA Championship.
Joining Brun in winning 2-of-3 matches on the weekend were four other Frogs: seniors Eli Cole (3) and Daniel Jennevret (2); sophomore Michael Culin (2); and freshman Paul Barjon (2.5).
In the individual standings, Jennevret tied for fifth place (-2; 214), Cole finished ninth (+2; 218), Barjon tied for 12th (+4; 220), freshman Thomas Mantovanini tied for 18th (+9; 225) and Culin was 20th (+13; 229).
Barjon and Culin were making their TCU debuts, while Cole was in his first collegiate tournament since the 2011 NCAA Championship after sitting out all of last season due to injury.
TCU returns to action in mid-October for its final tournament of the fall when it takes part in the annual Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windmere, Fla.
