TCU Wraps Up Play at Pebble Beach
Sept. 4, 2016
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- The TCU men's golf team wrapped up play at the Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Links on Sunday by shooting a 2-under 358. The Frogs finished the 54-hole tournament at 3-under-par to place seventh in a loaded field of top teams.
Individually, senior Chelso Barrett led the Frogs on the weekend and finished 7-under-par to tie for eighth place. Sophomore Turner MacLean turned in the Frogs' top round on Sunday, a 4-under 68, to finish at 6-under for the tournament, just one shot back of Barrett in 11th place.
Round of the Day Sophomore Stefano Mazzoli rebounded from shooting a 76 on Saturday and carded a bogey-free, 3-under 69 on Sunday. The round was one stroke off his TCU career best and jumped him 13 places on the leaderboard into a tie for 30th, the second best finish of his TCU career.
The Italian, who played in the Open Championship this July, birdied back-to-back par-4s on holes No. 9 and No. 10. He then birdied the par-5 18th, one of golf's most famous holes, after posting double-bogeys on the hole on Friday and Saturday.
Other Notables - Barrett's top 10 finish was the ninth of his career, and the first since finishing second at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in February.
- MacLean's 11th place finish was a career best for the Fort Worth native. His previous career high was a 24th place finish at last season's Connecticut Cup. His 4-under 68 on Sunday matched his career high, which he set on Friday.
- TCU opened its season at the Carmel Cup for the third straight season. The Frogs' 3-under 1077 was 29 strokes better than the 26-over 1106 they posted last season.
- The Carmel Cup allows teams an extra player in their lineup, so all teams played with six golfers with the top five scores from each round counting toward the team score.
- The Carmel Cup tournament field featured four top-10 teams and seven top-40 teams. It also featured 10 top-100 golfers, including Barrett who is ranked No. 99.
