JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - The TCU men's golf team logged a third-place team finish following a solid third round on Sunday at The Ridges/Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, the first event of the 2002-03 season. Sophomore David Schultz, who transferred to TCU this year, tied for the individual title in his first-ever Horned Frog appearance.

"Since it was the first tournament of the year, I wasn't sure what to expect," TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. "We really had a chance to win the tournament. We are a very young team that, all-in-all, played extremely well. With six holes to go, we were right in the hunt."

The Horned Frogs entered the day in a tie for seventh place, but made a push on the final morning with a combined score of 292 (+4). TCU's only struggles on Sunday came on the last six holes, as the team played Nos. 13-18 at eight-over-par.

Fifth-rated Wake Forest took home the team trophy with a 12-over-par score of 876, while No. 17 North Carolina (878) finished second. TCU (882, +18) wound up six shots out of the lead. TCU has now finished among the top-three at The Ridges in each of the last three years, including back-to-back championships in 2000 and 2001.

Schultz, one of three newcomers playing in his first tournament with the Frogs, posted a one-under score of 215 over 54 holes. He fired a 70 (-2) in the final round to land in a five-way tie for first place among the 78 golfers. A playoff for the individual championship was not held due to tight travel schedules for several schools.

"I'm very happy for David," Montigel said. "He is going to be a real asset to this team. Winning his first tournament at TCU is really impressive."

Senior Adam Rubinson, who shared 13th place, also had a strong last 18 holes. He matched Schultz with a final-round 70, and finished with a three-over 219. Sophomore J.J. Killeen (225, +9) was TCU's third-best finisher, coming in tied for 33rd.

Freshmen Colby Beckstrom (227, +11) and Drew Pigg (229, +13) also played in their first TCU tournaments. They finished tied for 42nd and 50th respectively. Junior Stephen Polanski posted a 228 (+12) playing as an individual to tie for 46th.

TCU, rated 28th according to the Golfweek preseason poll, finished higher than four top-20 teams at the event: No. 12 Auburn, No. 13 Tennessee, No. 16 Augusta State and No. 19 Virginia Tech.

The Horned Frogs return home tonight and will play in the Sooner Invitational at Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco, Texas, the next two days (Sept. 16-17). TCU is scheduled to tee off beginning at 9:10 a.m. on Monday.
