BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - TCU senior golfer David Schultz took individual runner-up honors to help the Horned Frogs tie for seventh at the highly-competitive Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala. TCU, ranked 10th in the nation according to the GCAA/Precept Coaches Poll, was one of seven teams rated in the nation's top 12 that competed in the event.

The Horned Frogs recorded their second consecutive seven-under 277 to finish the Jerry Pate with a three-round 840 (-12). The final-round 277 tied for the fourth-best score of the day. Unranked Augusta State (825) claimed the tournament title by four strokes over No. 3 Georgia Tech (829).

Schultz entered the day in a four-way tie for first place, and shot his third consecutive sub-70 round with a two-under 69. He completed the tournament with a 54-hole sum of 205 (-8), just two strokes behind Augusta State's Kalle Edberg (203). Schultz's three-day score was the second-best of his college career, behind only a 15-under 201 at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in April of 2003. Schultz, a native of Fargo, N.D., was in search of his third career collegiate title and his first since the Thunderbird.

Junior Drew Pigg was the next best finisher for the Frogs, as he shared 24th place with a two-under 211. Pigg fired a final-round 69, his best score of the tournament, on Tuesday. The 24th-place landing was the lowest of the campaign for the Plano product, who has enjoyed a strong fall season on the links.

TCU's final three competitors, senior J.J. Killeen (Lubbock) and juniors Drew Laning (Little Rock, Ark.) and Colby Beckstrom (North Muskegon, Mich.), all wound up in a tie for 41st. The trio of players each finished with three-over totals of 216. Beckstrom enjoyed the Horned Frogs' best round of the day, as he carded a three-under 68 to play the final two rounds at minus-four. Laning posted his second straight even-par 71, while Killeen notched a 74 (+3).

TCU is next in action at the Prestige at PGA West in LaQuinta, Calif., from Nov. 1-2. The Horned Frogs finished second at the event in 2003 and claimed the team title in 2002. Beckstrom was the individual medalist at the Prestige last year.
