No. 14 TCU Claims Third Place at Jerry Pate

Oct. 15, 2002

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Tuesday's third and final round was cancelled due to heavy rain at the 2002 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, giving the TCU men's golf team a third-place finish at the invitational tournament. The Horned Frogs shot rounds of 283 and 280 on Monday for a five-under-par score of 563 at the Old Overton Golf Course.

Second-ranked Clemson won the tournament after shooting a pair of six-under 278s. The Tigers finished six strokes ahead of No. 6 Texas, seven strokes ahead of No. 14 TCU, and eight strokes ahead of No. 20 UNLV and No. 4 Wake Forest. Eight of the 12 teams completed the event under par, as No. 8 Arizona and No. 1 Georgia Tech are both -3 and Arizona is -1.

"We're disappointed that we weren't able to play the final round," TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. "The team played very well on Monday, and I really thought we had a chance to win the tournament. We were looking forward to playing with Clemson and Texas today, but we'll definitely take a third-place finish against this field."

TCU had four golfers land in the tournament's top 20. Leading the way was sophomore David Schultz, who tied for 12th with a two-under score of 140. It was the third time in four events that Schultz has finished among the top 20.

A pair of Frogs tied for 17th, as freshman Colby Beckstrom and sophomore J.J. Killeen posted 141s (-1). Beckstrom fired a 67 on the opening 18 holes, which tied for TCU's best individual round of the tournament. It was Beckstrom's third top-20 of the year, and was the best finish of the season for Killeen, who was last year's Conference USA Co-Freshman of the Year.

Also among the top 20 was senior Adam Rubinson, who notched an even-par 142. He fought back from an opening-round 75 to post a four-under 67 in round two. He matched Schultz and Beckstrom with his third top-20 finish of the fall season. Redshirt freshman Mark Jauernek had a solid showing in his first career tournament, as he tied for 46th place with a seven-over 149.

TCU is next in action at The Prestige at Palm Desert on Nov. 4-5 in Palm Springs, Calif.
