Men's Golf Surges to Fifth-Place Finish
Oct. 15, 2013
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Paul Barjon and Julien Brun both fired sub-par rounds as the TCU men's golf team climbed the standings for a fifth-place finish at the 2013 Crooked Stick Intercollegiate on Tuesday at Crooked Stick Golf Club.
"The team was more consistent today and I was happy that we were able to finish in the top five among the ranked programs," head coach Bill Montigel said. "Paul and Julien were two of only seven players to shoot under par today, so I was proud of the way they led us down the stretch."
The Horned Frogs entered Tuesday's final round in seventh spot and climbed the standings with a 6-over 294, which was the third-best round among the 14 squads. TCU, ranked No. 51, finished behind No. 25 Arkansas (+11), No. 44 Purdue (+16), No. 6 Georgia (+17) and No. 31 Florida State (+23), while topping No. 50 Indiana (+43) and No. 45 Florida (+44).
Barjon carded a 1-under 71 to finish fifth overall at 4-over for the tournament, marking his second-career top-five finish and the second straight for TCU this fall, as Brun placed third at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate last month. The fifth-place showing was the highest for Barjon since claiming the U.S. Intercollegiate title in March and was his second top-20 finish in a row after placing 17th in Albuquerque to open the season.
After a tough opening 36 holes on Monday, Brun settled in to also card a 1-under 71, gaining 12 spots to finish 12th overall. The Antibes, France, native notched his 25th-career top-20 finish on Tuesday.
The Frogs will return to the links on Sunday for the opening round of the three-day Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windmere, Fla., to wrap up the fall tournament season.
