SAN DIEGO CLASSIC LIVE RESULTS
FORT WORTH—The ninth-ranked TCU men’s golf team makes its second trip of the spring to Southern California this weekend for a pair of events. The Horned Frogs will first face Pepperdine in a dual match Saturday before taking part in the San Diego Classic early next week.
TCU opens its trip at Rancho Park Golf Club in Los Angeles against the Pepperdine Waves on Saturday with competition teeing off at 10 a.m. PST. The event will mark the first of two dual matches for the Frogs this season, as the squad also will face Georgia Tech on April 19 at the site of this year’s NCAA Championship in Atlanta.
Head coach Bill Montigel added the two dual matches to his team’s schedule this year as preparation for a possible trip to the NCAA Championship. The eight-team finals portion of the national championship has been contested with a match-play format dating back to the 2009-10 season.
Following Saturday’s date with the Waves, TCU heads south for the San Diego Classic Monday through Tuesday at San Diego Country Club. Thirteen other college teams will join the Frogs in the 54-hole event, including four top-50 squads from the latest Golfweek/Sagarin national rankings in No. 27 Texas Tech, No. 30 Missouri, No. 45 Arizona State and No. 50 Oregon State. Filling out the field will be Arizona, CSU-San Marcos, Louisville, Pepperdine, Point Loma Nazarene, San Diego, San Diego State, UT Arlington and Utah.
San Diego Country Club, located in Chula Visa, Calif., measures 7,033 yards and features a par score of 72. The course has played host to numerous championship events and was the former site of the PGA TOUR’s San Diego Open, now known as the Farmer’s Insurance Open.
TCU will feature its usual five-man lineup during its trip to the west coast: sophomore Julien Brun, senior Daniel Jennevret, senior Eli Cole, freshman Paul Barjon and senior Pontus Gad.
The Frogs continue to roll right along this spring, having climbed into the top-10 in the national polls all the way from their starting point of No. 43 thanks to three top-3 finishes in four events. The squad recorded its second team victory this season in its most recent outing two weeks back at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif.
Brun continues to lead TCU in the Golfweek individual rankings at No. 4 following his fifth career victory in Palm Desert. He has placed seventh or high in three of four spring events to earn his highest career national ranking. Joining Brun are three other Frogs rated among the nation’s top-90 golfers in Gad (No. 67), Jennevret (No.78) and Cole (No. 84). Each of the four golfers is on pace to shatter his previous-best mark for scoring average in a single season.
Following its stay in Southern California, TCU returns to Fort Worth before continuing its spring campaign March 16 through 17 at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
