Brun Wins Big 12 Championship
April 27, 2014
TRINITY, Texas -- Julien Brun's second-straight 66 made him the runaway individual medalist, while TCU finished fifth as play concluded Sunday at the Big 12 Championship at Whispering Pines Golf Club.
Brun's 9-stroke win over Iowa State's Sam Daley tied for the third-largest margin of victory in Big 12 Championship history. Brun's 72-hole score of 277 was just one stroke behind the Big 12 record of 276 by Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffman in 2009, while setting a new Whispering Pines Golf Club course record. Brun's 66 tied the Big 12 Championship mark for the lowest fourth-round score.
"I had a good start today and it helped me build momentum," Brun said. "This is a really stressful golf course. I couldn't relax until the end, but it feels great.
"My wedge game was very good. It helped give me a lot of birdies inside five feet. I didn't have to take too many chances. My driving was okay after a poor start the first day. Every round is key and to battle and shoot 74, instead of an 80, to stay in the tournament on the first day kept me in it."
A junior from Antibes, France, Brun extended his TCU career record to eight tournament victories. By winning the Big 12 Championship, Brun is TCU's second conference medalist in the last three years (Johan de Beer, Mountain West, 2012) and the sixth in program history.
In recording the 44th sub-70 round of his career, Brun totaled seven birdies. He shot par or better on 37 of his last 39 holes, including 15 birdies.
"Julien's performance was incredible," TCU head coach Bill Montigel said. "He plays so smart and within himself. Julien drove the ball incredibly, hit his iron shots and made a lot of putts. I couldn't be more proud of him. He's really worked at his game. The success he's achieving is no accident. He's just really good.
"We have a young team. They didn't start the tournament well, but they hung tough and finished strong."
TCU posted its best round of the tournament with a 5-under-par 283. It was also the second-best team score on the day. The Horned Frogs totaled an 1170, 12 strokes behind No. 14 Texas who captured the team championship with an 1158. TCU finished ahead of No. 13 Oklahoma and No. 27 Baylor.
TCU freshman Chelso Barrett tied for ninth with a 5-over 293, marking his third top-10 finish of the season to place him on the all-tournament team along with Brun. His final-round 72 included him recording par on 14 holes.
Paul Barjon closed his 70 today with a 35-foot birdie putt on 18. It was one of seven birdies for the sophomore from Noumea Cedex, New Caledonia. Barjon was 2 under on the front nine and shot par on the back nine.
Barjon and Giulio Castagnara tied for 32nd individually. Castagnara birdied two of his opening three holes en route to a 75.
TCU will now wait until May 5 to learn if it's selected for a 25th-consecutive NCAA postseason appearance.
