WAC Champion Frogs Earn Conference Golf Honors

FORT WORTH, Texas--Sophomore Adam Rubinson and senior Scott Volpitto, key members of the 2001 Western Athletic Conference champion TCU Horned Frogs, earned spots on the all-WAC team which was announced today.

Rubinson, who grabbed first-team honors, was the Frogs' top finisher in six of the team's 11 tournaments. In addition, he placed in the Top 10 five times and in the Top 20 on six occasions. The Fort Worth native is currently ranked 24th in the nation individually according to the Mastercard Collegiate Golf Ratings.

Rubinson, who grabbed all-conference mention for the first time in his career, was the WAC Golfer of for September after finishing in the Top 20 in each of the team's events that month. In the spring, his 16th-place tie at the conference championships helped the Frogs claim their third WAC title in five years.

Volpitto, a second-team honoree, had a stellar senior season. He finished in the Top 10 a team-best five times and was the squad's highest finisher three times during the 2000-01 campaign. He capped off his final campaign by finishing in second place at the WAC Championships. The showing was the best placing of his career and was the highest by a TCU player in a conference tournament since 1998.

Volpitto, also a first-time all-conference performer, is currently rated 46th nationally by Mastercard. Previously, he earned WAC Player of the Week honors after finishing eighth at the U.S. Collegiate in early April.

The league's head coaches vote for the all-WAC teams and player, freshman and coach of the year honorees. A complete list of the all-WAC teams follows:

First Team All-WAC: Franklin Hatchett, SMU, David Inglis, Tulsa, Adam Rubinson, TCU, Dan Swanson, UTEP, Nick Watney, Fresno State.

Second Team All-WAC: Scott Carlyle, Hawai`i, Nathan Fritz, UTEP, Mike Haack, Nevada, Sprague Kolp, Nevada, Scott Volpitto, TCU.

Freshman of the Year: David Inglis, Tulsa. Player of the Year: Nick Watney, Fresno State. Co-Coach of the Year: Bill Brogden, Tulsa & Rick Todd, UTEP.
