Brun Wins European Challenge Tour Event

Sophomore Julien Brun

Sept. 23, 2012

Seilh, France—TCU sophomore All-American Julien Brun became only the sixth amateur to win a European Challenge Tour event Sunday when he took top honors at the ALLIANZ Golf Open Toulouse Metropole in his home country.

The Challenge Tour, founded in 1986, is the second-tier professional tour in Europe that is the equivalent of the United States’ Tour, formerly known as the Nationwide Tour. The top-20 annual finishers on the Challenge Tour qualify for membership on the European Tour.

Brun shot a 1-under 70 to finish the four-day tournament at -13, one stroke ahead of Italy’s Matteo Delpodio (-12). Among the other players finishing in the top-5 was former Oklahoma State standout Peter Uihlein, who won the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship and the 2011 Ben Hogan Award as the top U.S. collegiate golfer.

Brun opened the weekend with three straight rounds of 67 to grab the lead entering the final round. He led by two strokes Sunday before Delpodio cut the advantage in half with a late birdie, but he was able to hold off the challenger with a par on the final hole.

The runner-up finisher at the 2012 NCAA Championship as a freshman, Brun has had a fast start to his sophomore year. He won top medalist honors earlier this month while leading TCU to the team title at the Carmel Cup in Monterey, Calif., in the squad’s only event of the fall thus far. The victory marked Brun’s fourth in only 15 collegiate tournaments.

Next up for Brun is the World Amateur Team Championships next month in Turkey, where he will compete for Team France. TCU will feature three golfers in the event, as freshman Paul Barjon will join Brun on the French team and senior Daniel Jennevret will play for Sweden. The three Frogs will resume the NCAA season in late October at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windmere, Fla.
