AMES, Iowa -- The TCU men's and women's track and field teams will move on to the postseason as the Horned Frogs compete at the 2017 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship at the Lied Recreation Center on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25.
In her first race of the indoor season, sophomore Brenley Goertzen broke the school record in the 3,000-meter race as she won with a time of 9:27.83 at the Aggie Team Invitational. She then went on to improve to 9:19.21 in Washington. Goertzen emerged as one of the best distance runners in the Big 12 throughout the 2016 cross country season. She earned bronze at the conference championships and placed sixth at regionals, becoming the first Frog since 2012 to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships.
The quartet of junior Kevin McClanahan, freshman Jostyn Andrews, freshman Ryan Champlin and sophomore Derrick Mokaleng produced a season-best time of 3:06.84 in the 4x4 last week at Notre Dame. Their time ranks No. 15 in the country.
Freshman throwers Ryan Camp and Isaiah Rogers have already found themselves on TCU's all-time list in their first season in Purple and White. Camp moved up to the No. 2 spot on the all-time list at the Aggie Invite with a distance of 60 feet 1.25 inches (18.32 meters) in the weight throw. Rogers also jumped into the top-10 list as he threw 57 feet 8.50 inches (17.59 meters) in the shot put.
On the sprinting side, junior Emeilo Ferguson has picked up where he left off last year at Southwest Christian. The Kingston, Jamaica native has finished in the top two in all of his 60 meter races this season. He currently has a season-best time of 6.66, ranking 18th in the nation.
Junior Scotty Newton leads the way in jumps on the men’s side. Newton has produced back-to-back personal-bests in the triple jump. He recorded a mark of 52 feet 3.75 inches (15.94 meters) at New Mexico before moving to No. 2 on TCU's all-time list with a distance of 53 feet 4.25 inches (16.26 meters) at Frisco. Last year, he earned a bid to nationals for the second-consecutive season in the triple jump and took home silver in the triple jump at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
The men's 4x4 relay time of 3:06.84 ranks No. 15 in the country. Newton's triple jump mark of 53-4.25/16.26m ranks No. 7 in the country. Ferguson ranks No. 23 in the 60 meters at 6.66. McClanahan ranks No. 23 in the 600 meters at 1:18.51.
Senior Jalen Miller, who took home third in the 60 meters at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, has made his return to the track after sitting out last year due to injury. Miller, competing for Ole Miss at the time, clocked in at 6.57 in the 60-meter finals in a race that gave TCU’s Ronnie Baker his first of two gold medals in the 60.
