TCU Track Alum Porter Inducted to SWC Hall of Fame
Aug. 25, 2017
FORT WORTH – The Texas Sports Hall of Fame announced the induction of nine new members of the 2017 Southwest Conference Hall of Fame class Thursday. Representing TCU in this year’s class was former star sprinter Horatio Porter.
The Southwest Conference disbanded in 1996, but every year inducts one athlete from each of its former members. Comprising the SWC were Arkansas, Baylor, Houston, Rice, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, and Texas Tech.
“The class of 2017 is legendary,” said Cooper Jones, the President & CEO of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. “It is legendary because of the character and accomplishments of these talented student-athletes."
Porter, class of ’92, was a five-time All-American sprinter and two-time national champion. In 1989, Porter ran the lead-off leg for the 4X100 meter relay team that set the NCAA record (38.23). His second national title came in 1991 in the 4X100 meter relay. He also won SWC titles in the 55-meter and 200-meter runs in the 1992 indoor season.
Also being inducted is former TCU football defensive coordinator Dick Bumpas, who coached at TCU for 11 years and retired in 2015. Bumpas worked with Gary Patterson at Kansas State, Tennessee Tech, Utah State, and Navy before coming to TCU.
TCU will host the induction ceremony in the Brown-Lupton University Union at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 2, 2017. Please contact Emily McAnsh at email@example.com or (254) 756-1633 to order tickets for the induction luncheon.
