Chappell Goes Undefeated at Hidden Dual
Jan. 12, 2014
FORT WORTH, Texas - Junior Nick Chappell remained undefeated at the UCF Hidden Dual, as he led the No. 39 TCU men's tennis team to 10 wins over Rice on Sunday in Orlando, Fla.
"This was a very good weekend for the team and an excellent performance by Nick Chappell," coach David Roditi said. "Nick played No. 1 singles and doubles all weekend and it says a lot about his performance that he went undefeated. He played with the right strategy, was challenging and competitive and now has the right mindset for conference competition. I thought the highlight today besides Nick was that there was great energy and the team played exceptionally well during doubles play.
"I believe the guys played for assistant coach Mark Tjia because today was his last match with the team. He has been offered a head coaching position, so the team dedicated the match to him and gave him a nice Gatorade shower after the match."
The Horned Frogs began the final day of competition by sweeping all four doubles matches against the Owls. The No. 11 team of Chappell and Will Stein defeated Tommy Bennett and David Warren 6-4, while Arnau Dachs and Trey Daniel teamed up to bring down Sriker Alla and Leif Berger 6-4.
Chappell started off his singles play for the day by losing the first set to Alla 6-4, but coming back to win the final two sets 6-3, 6-2 to stay undefeated in the tournament. Daniel was also successful in his singles match in the Black Group by defeating Gustafsson 6-1, 6-5(4).
Gonzalez and Stein were victorious in singles action in the Gold Group, as Gonzalez took a 6-5(0), 6-0 win over Warren, while Stein defeated Munch 6-3, 6-2.
Along with Chappell finishing the tournament undefeated, the duo of Dachs and Daniel also went undefeated in doubles action in the Black Group for the weekend, while Lugones went perfect in singles action.
The Horned Frogs will next see action at the NCTC Collegiate Classic on Jan. 17-18 in Indian Wells, Calif.
