FORT WORTH, Texas – Dominating play across the board led the No. 10 TCU men’s tennis team to a season-opening 6-0 victory over Abilene Christian on Thursday night at the indoor tennis facility inside the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

The Horned Frogs (1-0) surged out to the lead after a commanding performance in doubles as Alastair Gray and Trevor Johnson paired up for the first win of the season with a 6-1 victory on court one. Reese Stalder and newcomer Bertus Kruger finished off the point as the new pair came away with a 6-2 win over the Wildcats (0-3).

TCU did not miss a beat in singles action as they grabbed the opening sets on all six courts. Stalder was the first off the court at the No. 4 spot as he cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hunter Holman with senior Guillermo Nuñez following with his own 6-0, 6-0 win over Henry Adams on the third line. In his first collegiate match, No. 23 Gray clinched the overall match victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jonathan Sheehy at the No. 2 position.

After the match was already decided, Kruger and Johnson were able to finish off their matches in straight sets as Kruger downed Paul Domanski 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 5 spot while Johnson defeated Josh Sheehy 6-2, 6-2 in his first time playing at No.1 singles.

Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
“The first match is always a little scary especially when school started so late and we just had our first official team practice with everybody on Tuesday because of all the new rules. We had four guys play today who had never played a dual match for TCU and we are just getting to know three of them in Eduardo (Roldan), Bertus (Kruger) and Max (Kruzban). If you would have told me before the match that we were going to come out here and win doubles like we did 6-1 and 6-2 and without (Alex) Rybakov we were going to win a few matches like we did, I would have told you that would have been amazing. I am happy about that and obviously with every first match of the year there is a lot of room for improvement.

“We have a really tough match ahead of us on the road at Arizona State. They have had tough matches against top-ranked teams and they lost. We know they are hungry and they are going to come after us. We have a couple of days to prepare for that and we are just happy that we are here and we got our season started. So many people do so much for us to get to this point today and this is a way to thank them for doing all their work so we can have the team that we have. I thought it was a great turnout for a Thursday night. It was cold out there and we had a lot of support from not just students but also from the community. We will get it going and we will do more stuff to get the house packed. It was a good start for us.”
