FORT WORTH, Texas – A strong performance at the top positions guided the No. 10 TCU men’s tennis team to its first road victory in the 2018 season as they scored a 5-2 win over Arizona State on Sunday afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz.

The Horned Frogs (2-0) started off the match with Trevor Johnson and Alastair Gray picking up the easy 6-2 victory at the No. 1 spot in doubles to set the pace for the rest of the match. After a battle at the bottom two positions, Reese Stalder and Bertus Kruger finished off the doubles point with a 7-5 victory at the No. 3 spot to give TCU the 1-0 lead over the Sun Devils (0-3).

Johnson, Stalder and No. 31 Alex Rybakov all scored identical 6-2, 6-4 victories in singles action to score the overall match victory for the Frogs while No. 23 Gray needed three sets to finish off his opponent. After getting the 6-2 win in the first set, Gray fell 7-5 in the second before coming back in the final set for a 6-4 victory.

Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
“Today was a very good road win for our team. It is always nice to get that doubles point on the road. We got off to an awesome start in doubles and then we kept our cool at the end to get the point. Trevor (Johnson) and Alastair (Gray) had a strong performance at No. 1 doubles. In singles, we had some bright spots and very good performances and some spots where we aren’t where we need to be. That’s normal at the start of the season. We will put in the work to continue to improve like we have always done every season and as long as we stay hungry and humble good things will happen. We have a few days to improve a little and be ready to play next Saturday at home against San Diego and have a chance to qualify for national indoors which is something that we couldn’t accomplish last year.

“The story of today is a celebration to have the men’s program back at this level at Arizona State. They are already so good and this program will just continue to rise towards the top of Division I. They have great leadership and awesome support from their administration. I hope more Power 5 schools bring back their men’s tennis programs.”
