Jan. 24, 2004
FORT WORTH, Texas
The 18th-rated TCU men's tennis team notched a 6-1 victory Saturday night against No. 68 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Bayard Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth. Next up for the Horned Frogs is a 1:30 p.m. tilt with SMU Feb. 4 in Fort Worth.
"I thought we toughed out the match," TCU Head Coach Joey Riv? said. "We were a little rusty out there, but our guys hung in and played well. It was good to get that one under our belts."
It took the Horned Frogs more than an hour and a half to claim the doubles point. Their first victory came at three, where Jacob Martin and Alex Menichini were 8-5 winners over Javier Bacaicoa and David Plasencia. The clincher came at two thanks to Hector Almada and Jacopo Tezza's 9-7 victory against Goncalo Figeiredo and Oscar Roman. At one, the Frogs' 19th-ranked tandem of Rafael Abreu and Fabrizio Sestini was upset by Jeremy Blandin and Luis Moris, losing in a tiebreaker, 9-7. Abreu and Sestini trailed at one point in the match, 6-3, and were able to fight back to force the breaker.
In singles, Tezza recorded TCU's first triumph at No. 4 singles, beating Plasencia in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Moments later, Sestini chalked up a win at two over No. 83 Figeiredo, 6-4, 6-1, to put TCU up by a 3-0 count. Sestini fell behind in the first set, 4-1, and managed to win 11 of the next 12 games for the victory.
The deciding match came at three singles, where Almada pulled out a straight-setter versus Moris, 7-6, 6-2. It was Almada's first victory with the Purple and White.
The Horned Frogs went on to snag wins at one and six. Menichini needed three sets to defeat Blandin, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6, at the top slot, while Martin made quick work of Bacaicoa at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0.
The Islanders managed to pick up a win at No. 5 courtesy of Roman. He was a 6-4, 7-6 winner against Abreu. Roman played for TCU during fall 2001 before transferring to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
