FORT WORTH, Texas – Despite going up 3-1 in the match, the No. 10 TCU men’s tennis team could not hold onto the lead as San Diego came back to win three straight singles matches to win the match 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.

The Horned Frogs (2-1) had Reese Stalder and Bertus Kruger pick up a 6-1 victory on court three to start the match in doubles, but the Toreros (2-0) came from behind to take the top two courts to steal the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

TCU did not falter at the start of singles as they took the opening sets on all six courts. Senior Guillermo Nuñez put the first point on the board with a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court four, with No. 31 Alex Rybakov following mere minutes later with a 6-2, 6-1 victory on court one to put the Frogs up 2-1. Trevor Johnson increased the lead as he finished out August Holmgren on court two, 6-1, 6-4, with TCU battling it out on the final three courts. After a retirement on court three, it all came down to courts five and six with both in a decisive third set. San Diego was able to gut out the victories on both courts to take the overall 4-3 team win.

Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
“I am obviously disappointed and I feel we didn’t take advantage of many leads and opportunities. That San Diego team and their coaches deserve a lot of credit for continuing to come back and win the matches that they had a chance to win. They played very well down the stretch and handled the situation better than we did.

“I hate we lost at home in front of our fans and put ourselves in a tough situation for tomorrow. Last year we were in a similar spot and our team dug in and got better and stronger and finished the season with lots to be proud of. Our plan is to do the same and it will require everybody and everything we got.”
