TCU’s Comeback Falls Short

Feb. 6, 2018

Final Stats

FORT WORTH, Texas – After going down 3-0 in the match, the No. 16 TCU men’s tennis team mounted a comeback at the top four positions in singles action, but fell just short as No. 3 North Carolina came out of Tuesday’s showdown with a 4-3 victory at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Horned Frogs (3-2) suffered two quick losses in doubles against the Tar Heels (7-0) before dropping the opening sets on all six courts. TCU did not falter after losing on courts five and six as Trevor Johnson got his second victory over a ranked opponent and fourth straight win with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 94 Robert Kelly at the No. 2 spot.

After dropping a tiebreaker in the opening set, No. 31 Alex Rybakov continued to stay on serve until Benjamin Sigouin got one final break to win the match for UNC with a straight set win at No. 1. With the match already decided, TCU was determined to finish the match strong as Guillermo Nuñez and Reese Stalder each picked up their first ranked victories of the season. Nuñez downed No. 70 Simon Soendergaard, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot while Stalder was able to take down No. 79 Joshua Peck, 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(6) on court four.

Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
“We knew coming here that it was going to take all we had and turns out I was right. The doubles point turned out to be critical and that’s probably the point I am most disappointed in the way we played and competed. UNC deserves a lot of credit for that and I just know we can do better.

“On the positive side, I loved how we battled back from losing the doubles point plus six first sets on the road against a top team. It’s good to know we have that heart and fight in us. We just dug ourselves a little too big of a hole. Their No. 1 player served great and played very good indoor tennis to beat (Alex) Rybakov and I give credit to him. We will continue to improve and come back home to battle USF this Friday night. We will need all the support from our fans.”
