Final Stats

FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 18 TCU men’s tennis team returned to the friendly confines of the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center and scored a 6-1 victory over USF on Friday night.

The No. 53 doubles pair of Alex Rybakov and Guillermo Nuñez got the Horned Frogs (4-2) off to a winning start with a quick 6-4 victory on court one. Trevor Johnson and Max Kurzban were able to clinch the doubles point by finishing off the Bulls (2-5) on court three, 6-4.

In singles action, Nuñez breezed through his opponent on court three, 6-0, 6-0, for his fourth straight victory to put TCU up 2-0 in the match. After being down 5-2 in the opening set, No. 36 Rybakov rebounded by winning 11 of the next 13 games to score a 7-6 (2), 6-1 win on court one. No. 80 Johnson was able to clinch the overall match victory as the senior scored his third win over a ranked opponent with a 6-3, 7-6(16) victory over No. 68 Alberto Barroso-Camp.

With the match already decided, the rest of the matches were played out with Eduardo Roldan getting his first dual match singles victory on court six before Bertus Kruger came back to finish off his opponent in three sets on court five.

Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
“We had a great opportunity today to honor an inaugural member of our Keep It In The Purple Committee - Susan Dean. She was such a big part of our program and today was all about her. The guys played for her and we are going to miss her. We got the ‘W’ for her today.

“You look at the score and it says 6-1 but people know that if we would have lost the first set at No. 1 and the tiebreaker at No. 6 the match could have gone either way. Every match tonight was so close and our guys need to understand that. I am proud of the way Bertus (Kruger) fought back and won in three sets in singles and I wish Reese (Stalder) would have been able to pull it out at the end. I know he really wanted it. We just have to keep learning and keep getting better in all of these matches.

“The level that Trevor played at against a great No. 2 player for USF makes me really proud of him. The way he fought to close out that second set was dreadful to watch but he got it done. He learned a lot from that and we need those matches and we need those situations so we can keep getting stronger. I actually prefer the way he won in singles instead of just 6-3, 6-1. When Guillermo (Nuñez) plays like that, it is just so much fun to watch. He played at a really high level and gave us a quick point. We just need to get a little bit healthier, get some rest and be ready for our third match of the week against SMU on Sunday.”
