Feb. 21, 2014
FORT WORTH, Texas - The No. 35 TCU men's tennis team opened the TCU Spring Invitational by blanking USC Upstate twice on Friday with a dominating 4-0 victory in the morning and a 7-0 win in the evening at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs (4-2, 0-0 Big 12) did not drop a set against the Spartans (2-6, 0-0 Atlantic Sun), as all 10 members of the team saw action on Friday.
TCU began the day by cruising to the doubles point of the first match against USC Upstate. The No. 18 pairing of Nick Chappell and Will Stein started the Frogs off with a 6-1 win on court one, before Hudson Blake and Blake Wiggins blanked Jamie Yates and Rajanvir Dharni 6-0 on court three to seal the win for TCU.
With the score 1-0, Arnau Dachs made quick work of his opponent on court two as the junior took down Matthias Kidler 6-0, 6-1 to put TCU ahead 2-0 in the match. The win for the Frogs would come as the end of the singles lineup, as freshmen Jhonathan Gonzalez and Andres Alfonzo picked up wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, for a 4-0 TCU win.
The two teams faced each other again later on Friday and the Frogs picked up right where they left off. Blake would team with Facundo Lugones in the doubles portion and got TCU on the board, as the pair downed Yates and Gonzalo Blanco 8-3 at the No. 2 position. Gonzalez and Rodolfo Bustamante finished off the point for the team with an 8-5 win on court three.
TCU shook up the lineup in singles action, as No. 77 Nick Chappell played at No. 2 singles for the first time in his career at TCU. The Indianapolis native had no problems with Blanco and earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Dachs stepped in at No. 1 singles and tallied a 6-2, 6-4 win over Ramon Simonetti.
Bustamante was the first done with his singles match, as the lone senior fought for a 6-2, 6-0 downing of Dharni on court four. Gonzalez continued his winning ways by completing his match next at No. 6 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory, while Trey Daniel clinched the match for the Frogs with a 6-2, 6-1 win on court three.
After Chappell and Dachs completed their matches, Alfonzo finished up the straight set wins for TCU with 6-0, 7-5 downing at the No. 6 position.
TCU will continue action in the invitational tomorrow as the Frogs take on San Francisco at 11 a.m., before facing Lamar at 3 p.m., on the Bernard J. `Tut' Bartzen Varsity Courts.
