TCU Snags 4-1 Victory Over Memphis

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The 13th-rated TCU men's tennis team rebounded from a 4-3 loss to South Alabama Wednesday by defeating Memphis, 4-1, Saturday in the Conference USA Shootout in Fort Worth, Texas. TCU improved to 4-1 with the victory, while the Tigers dropped to 4-6. The Horned Frogs face No. 37 Louisville Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CST for the tournament title.
The Horned Frogs prevailed in doubles despite falling behind early on two of the three courts. Radu Barbu and Jacopo Tezza ended up losing their contest with Memphis' Mark Finnegan and Alex Jago at three by an 8-5 score. Jordan Freitas and Jacob Martin answered for TCU with an 8-5 victory against Alex Bucewicz and Martin Tamla at the No. 2 slot.
The No. 1 doubles match between 13th-ranked Rafael Abreu and Fabrizio Sestini for TCU and No. 58 Scott Felsenthal and James Spence of Memphis went into a tiebreaker. Abreu and Sestini actually trailed a break at 6-4 before running off three consecutive games to go up 7-6. Tied at 3-3 on the changeover in the breaker, TCU's tandem won three points in a row before finishing off Felsenthal and Spence by a 7-4 margin.
Freitas got TCU its second point with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Tamla at four singles. Bucewicz grabbed the Tigers' only point when he upset No. 22 Sestini at the top slot, 6-3, 6-3. Abreu put the Frogs ahead 3-1 after he dispatched Finnegan by scores of 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. He trailed 3-0 in the first set before coming back for the win. Barbu, who also fell behind 3-0 in the first frame, recovered to earn a 7-6, 6-1 victory against Jago at three singles to secure the team's win.
