Final Stats

FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 26 TCU men’s tennis team dropped a hard-fought battle with No. 9 Illinois on Friday night as the Illini came out on top, 5-2, at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Ill.

The Horned Frogs (6-3) and Illini (7-4) began with a battle in doubles with Illinois picking up the first win on court three. TCU responded with the No. 57 pair of Guillermo Nuñez and Alex Rybakov getting win No. 4 this season on court two with a 6-2 victory. A late break on court one proved to be the difference in the doubles point as Illinois took the early 1-0 lead.

The Illini were able to get three straight-set wins in singles to claim the overall match victory as the other three courts were played out. No. 42 Rybakov got win No. 5 over a ranked opponent and fourth straight victory as the junior picked up a 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 victory on court two over No. 97 Aron Hiltzik. Reese Stalder was able to get the second point for the Frogs as the junior defeated No. 83 Zeke Clark, 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-7, for his second win over a ranked opponent to end the match. No. 47 Trevor Johnson went toe-to-toe with No. 23 Aleks Vukic on court one, but ultimately came up short in a tiebreaker in the third set.

Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
“It's never fun to lose. Illinois played well and they deserved the win. This was another opportunity for us to get a very good win and we didn't do what we needed to do to get it. We keep having unfortunate injuries during matches and we are not handling them very well as a team. For this team to have a successful and proud season we need to handle it better. We have the players and the game and we will figure out the other part. We need a sense of urgency. On a positive note about the match, I was very proud of Reese (Stalder), Trevor (Johnson) and (Alex) Rybakov’s performances today.
